Soma Addiction and Abuse

Siobhan Morse, Executive Director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies discusses Soma Addiction and Abuse.

What is Soma?

Soma, the chemical drug compound carisoprodol, is a prescription muscle relaxant for reducing certain types of pain and muscle tension.

It is frequently abused and is scheduled as a controlled substance in some states.

Soma can be fatal in an overdose situation. Soma’s potential for causing addiction is well-documented.

People can become addicted to Soma and similar drugs even when these drugs are used as prescribed.

Others deliberately use Soma to enhance the effects of alcohol or other drugs.

What is Soma abuse?

Soma acts directly on the central nervous system rather than directly on skeletal muscles.

The drug seems to interrupt communication between the muscle and the spinal cord resulting in the sedation and the reduced perception of pain.

Individuals abuse Soma by taking more than the prescribed amount in order to enhance its effects or by combining the drug with other drugs or alcohol.

Soma addiction symptoms and side effects

Soma addiction symptoms include a strong desire or a need to continue taking the medicine even after the pain or muscle spasm has been relieved. They also include the need to increase the dose to receive the intended effects of the medication.

Side effects of using Soma include: agitation, depression, dizziness, sleepiness, fainting, headache, insomnia, poor coordination, nausea, and vomiting, rapid heart rate, and shaking and tremors.

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Soma?

After discontinuing the use of Soma, withdrawal symptoms can include: abdominal cramps, headache, insomnia, chills, and nausea.
