Dilaudid Addiction and Abuse
Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Dilaudid addiction and abuse.
What is Dilaudid?
Dilaudid is an analgesic narcotic with an addiction liability similar to that of morphine. It is apparent within 15 minutes and remains in effect for more than five hours.
Dilaudid is approximately eight times more potent on a milligram basis than morphine. It is often called “drug store heroin” on the streets.
What are the effects of Dilaudid?
Dilaudid can create effects that are very similar to morphine although the euphoria has been reported as closer to Codeine.
Although it is rare, some users can experience nausea and vomiting.
Dilaudid is considered to have a moderately high dependency level as addiction or dependence can occur when the drug is used for longer than five weeks or at high doses.
Tolerance can develop in individuals who need to take more of the drug to feel the same effect. The addiction, if developed, can be both physical and psychological.
What is Dilaudid addiction and abuse?
The abuse of Dilaudid stems from the fact that it delivers the high euphoric intravenous rush that is very similar to the rush one experiences with heroin.
As Dilaudid and hydromorphone are some of the most prescribed opiates to treat the relief of pain for the terminally ill. It also represents an attractive rush for those seeking a fix.
What are the side effects of Dilaudid?
The side effects of Dilaudid include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, anorexia, constipation, pain and irritation at the injection site, hallucinations, itching or skin rashes, increased sweating and agitation.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Dilaudid?
Aches and pains, anxiety, flu-like symptoms, diarrhea, hallucinations, headaches, insomnia, loss of appetite, mood swings, pain, sweating and upper respiratory problems are the withdrawal symptoms of Dilaudid.
