Demerol Addiction and Abuse

Siobahn Morse, Executive Director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Demerol Addiction and Abuse.

What is Demerol?

Demerol is part of a group of drugs considered to be narcotic pain relievers. Similar to morphine, Demerol is used to treat moderate to severe pain. As an opiate agonist, Demerol is a Schedule II controlled substance because it is highly abuse-likely.

What are the effects of Demerol?

Demerol alters the perception of pain in the spinal cord and the central nervous system but offers no effect on nerve endings. Demerol does trigger the brain’s pleasure centers while blocking pain, intensifying its ability to generate addiction and addiction behaviors.
