Avinza Addiction and Abuse
Siobhan Morse, Executive Director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies discusses Avinza addiction and abuse.
What is Avinza?
According to published medical references, Avinza is a morphine tablet used to relieve moderate to severe pain.
Morphine long-acting tablets and capsules are only used by patients who are expected to need medication to relieve moderate to severe pain around the clock for longer than a few days.
Morphine is in a class of medication called opiated, narcotic analgesics. It works by changing the way the body senses pain.
What are the effects of Avinza?
Taken as directed under proper medical supervision, morphine can be used to manage pain effectively. However, morphine has an extremely high potential for addiction.
Tolerance and physiological dependence can develop rapidly. Physical dependence occurs with long-term repeated use or abuse.
What is Avinza addiction and abuse?
Taking high doses of a narcotic, including Avinza, especially if you are not used to it, can result in breathing problems, extreme drowsiness, coma, and even death.
The risk of overdose is especially high with long-acting capsules such as Avinza. Since many common methods of abuse can cause the capsule to release too much morphine too quickly, the capsules contain tiny, extended-release beads that can release too much medication if crushed, chewed, snorted, dissolved or injected. This could easily lead to lethal overdose.
What are some of the side-effects of Avinza ?
Some side-effects of Avinza include: dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, changes in the ability to taste food, dry mouth, sweating, agitation, nervousness, and mood changes.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Avinza?
Withdrawal symptoms of Avinza can vary according to intensity and may include: dilated pupils, irritability, anxiety, backache and joint pain, weakness, abdominal cramps, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, high blood pressure, fast breathing, and a rapid heart rate.
Although a withdrawal from Avinza can be very unpleasant, it is rare that it causes life-threatening symptoms.
