What constitutes drug paraphernalia?
Many kinds of items can be identified as drug paraphernalia including ordinary household products or things disguised to resemble ordinary items that can be extremely challenging to identify.
Is drug paraphernalia illegal to buy or possess?
Many states have enacted their own laws prohibiting drug paraphernalia on top of the Federal drug paraphernalia statute which provides specific guidance on illegal drug paraphernalia possession and importation.
How is illegal drug paraphernalia purchased?
Drug paraphernalia can be obtained in various ways, particularly because ordinary household products may have been modified to make, use or conceal illegal narcotics.
What drug types are typically used with a specific type of paraphernalia?
Drug paraphernalia can be different from drug to drug and sometimes paraphernalia can be used for a variety of drugs. Be on the lookout for all types of paraphernalia including cocaine paraphernalia, Ecstasy paraphernalia, marijuana paraphernalia, and inhalant paraphernalia.
Here are a few common, suspicious items:
- Aroma rub container such as Vicks or other eucalyptus products used to enhance the effect of certain drugs such as Ecstasy.
- Bong: A large water pipe typically used to smoke marijuana and may be used for other mind-altering substances that can be smoked.
- Crack pipe: A simple glass tube with a screen inside to prevent the crack from being inhaled.
- Drug pipes: Can range from colored glass pipes called “bowls” to a soda can with small holes in the body used for smoking different substances.
- Rave glo-sticks: Typically used to enhance the effects of Ecstasy in a club or party setting.
- Rolling papers: Typically used to roll marijuana cigarettes called joints.
- Surgical masks or dust mask: Used in combination with aroma rub to enhance the effects of Ecstasy.
- Syringe: Used to inject various types of substances intravenously.
