What Is an Intervention?

Carl Arrogante, a family therapist and addiction specialist, discusses Interventions in this Special Report.

What is an Intervention?

The intervention process brings all participants together with unity and clear communication.

Intervention isn’t about anger, resentment, or the desire to punish or hurt. These have no place in the intervention process.

Intervention provides motivation for change. However, it does not intimidate, manipulate, or humiliate, it just works.

Consequences are part of the solution. Those and other motivators are combined with love, making an intervention a great launching pad for change.

Will intervening make things worse?

Not taking action will make things worse, and intervention means taking action and no longer being helpless. It means re-designing your life and stopping the vicious cycle of insanity.

When should you intervene?

Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a progressive, chronic, and fatal disease. Complacency, secrets, arguments, isolation and fear become a normal part of life. The longer you wait, the more everyone suffers.

How do you initiate an intervention?

Getting in touch with an intervention specialist is the first step. All it takes is a simple call and this becomes the beginning of the end of insanity, confusion, and hopelessness.

It is a call-to-action to stop your loved one’s destructive behavior.

Intervention is a team effort in taking immediate steps to start the recovery process. Be prepared for open, honest, and sometimes blunt questions during the information gathering process.

This is the time to be completely transparent and not keep secrets of any kind.

What if they don’t go?

Family dynamics change as a result of intervention. Knowing you have done everything in your power to help the person you care for allows you to let go of guilt, shame, and doubt.

Recovery is a process, and intervention is the first step. The struggling person will have clear choices and outcomes.

Do you need an intervention?

A family is impacted when substance abuse and addiction enters the picture.

Take an honest look at what is going on around you. If you could make changes on your own, you would.

Consider the long-term consequences of your loved one’s addiction without minimizing or making excuses.

As the situation gets progressively worse, acting on this realization by reaching out for help can change your life and that of the addict.
