What is Lomotil?
Lomotil is used to treat diarrhea. It helps to decrease the number and frequently of bowel movements. It is the trade name for the drug combination diphenoxylate and atropine.
What are the effects of Lomotil?
Lomotil works by slowing the movement of the intestines. Lomotil is similar to narcotic pain relievers, but it acts mainly to slow the gut.
Atropine belongs to a class of drugs known to dry up body fluids and to also slow gut movement.
What is Lomotil addiction and abuse?
Addiction to or dependency on Lomotil is theoretically possible at high doses. Because of the structural and pharmacological similarity of Lomotil to Demerol, a definite addiction potential exists.
Lomotil should be administered with considerable caution to patients who are receiving addictive drugs, to individuals known to be addiction prone or to those whose histories suggest that they may increase their dosage on their own initiative.
What are the side effects of Lomotil?
The side effects of Lomotil include: blurred vision, constipation, decreased sweating, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite, loss of taste, nausea, and nervousness.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Lomotil?
The withdrawal symptoms of Lomotil include: stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
