Lunesta Addiction and Abuse
In this Special Report, Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Lunesta addiction and abuse.
What is Lunesta?
Lunesta is used to treat insomnia or difficulty following or staying asleep. Lunesta is in a class of medications called hypnotics.
It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow sleep. This class of drugs was developed to bind better to sleep receptors in the brain.
What is Lunesta abuse?
Just like with other sleeping medicines there is the possibility of becoming addicted to Lunesta.
Addiction or dependence is when a person feels like he or she needs to continue taking a medicine.
When a person is addicted to a medication, the body cannot properly function without it, and withdrawal symptoms can occur if the medicine is stopped.
When withdrawal symptoms are experienced, people often feel like they need to stay on their medicines just to prevent these symptoms from occurring again.
What are the side effects of Lunesta?
Side effects of Lunesta can include: headache, pain, daytime drowsiness, light-headedness, dizziness, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, unpleasant taste, dry mouth, unusual dreams, decreased sexual desire, painful menstrual periods and breast enlargement in males.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Lunesta?
Grouchiness, irritability, sweating, upset stomach and vomiting, stomach cramps and muscle cramps, shakiness, anxiety, panic attacks, fatigue, seizures, dizziness, and insomnia are all withdrawal symptoms of Lunesta.
