Percocet Addiction and Abuse

Percocet addiction and abuse is the subject of this Special Report by Siobahn Morse, Executive Director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies.

What is Percocet?

Percocet contains a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone.

Oxycodone is in a group of drugs called opioid pain relievers. An opioid is sometimes called a “narcotic.”

Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of the oxycodone.

Percocet is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

What are the effects of Percocet?

Like heroin, morphine and other opioid drugs, Percocet works by binding to the body’s opiate receptors, highly concentrated areas in the brain that control pain and emotions.

When opiate drugs bind to these receptors, they can drive up dopamine levels in the brain’s reward area, producing a state of euphoria and relaxation.

What is Percocet addiction and abuse?

Abuse can include altering the Percocet dose by taking more than needed, taking Percocet for unintended reasons or repeated chronic use of Percocet despite negative consequences.

Other signs of Percocet abuse and addiction include a mental preoccupation with obtaining and consuming the drug.

Others may falsify prescriptions or shop around for different doctors to secure more than one supply.

What are the side effects of Percocet?

The side effects of Percocet include: nausea, vomiting, constipation, light-headedness, dizziness and drowsiness.

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Percocet?

The withdrawal symptoms of Percocet include: anxiety, diarrhea, inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, increase in body temperature, increase in blood pressure, increased breathing and heart rate, muscle spasms and severe flu symptoms.
