Seconal Addiction and Abuse
Seconal addiction and abuse is the subject of this Special Report by Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies.
What is Seconal?
Seconal is in a group of drugs called barbiturates. Seconal slows the activity of your brain and nervous system. Seconal is used short term to treat insomnia.
Pentobarbitol is also used as an emergency treatment for seizures and to cause you to fall asleep for surgery.
In high enough doses, Seconal can induce anesthesia and in overdose can be deadly.
What are the effects of Seconal?
A person seeking to induce sleep with a barbiturate will find that this sleep is quite different from regular sleep.
Seconal can reduce the amount of time a person spends in the rapid eye movement phase of sleep or the dreaming stage.
Subsequent states of sleep are also decreased, delivering a much less satisfying sleep experience for the user.
What is Seconal addiction and abuse?
Like all barbiturates Seconal can be habit forming. With continued use of the drug, an individual can develop tolerance, psychological, and physical dependence.
This dependence is often the result of increases in dosage or decreases in dosage intervals without consulting a physician. A person who develops a dependence on Seconal can easily display signs very similar to those of an individual dealing with chronic alcoholism.
What are the side effects of Seconal?
The side effects of Seconal include: confusion, hallucinations, weak or shallow breathing, slow heart rate, problems with memory or concentration, and headache.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Seconal?
The withdrawal symptoms of Seconal include: anxiety, muscle twitching, tremors, progressive weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, convulsions, and delirium.
