What is the prescribed use of painkillers?
Painkillers are medications designed specifically to ease pain while some painkillers have specific health care purposes like certain migraine formulations. Most painkillers are used for general purposes.
There are several ways that painkillers are categorized. One method is to divide them into over-the-counter or OTC painkillers which are those that could be purchased by the consumer without a prescription and those that require a prescription for the legal purchase.
What are the most commonly abused painkillers?
The most commonly painkillers vary by region depending on what is easily available.
Hydrocodone such as Vicodin, Lortab, and Lorcet are one of the most commonly abused painkillers.
Oxycodone sold under the names such as Oxycontin is another very commonly abused painkiller.
These medications are meant to be long lasting, but when abused they may be crushed in order to obtain the maximum effect. This can lead to fatal overdose.
While these two painkillers are the most common, many people may abuse any number of painkillers that are easy for them to get.
Painkillers may take many forms. Most of them come as pills, but they may also be used as pills, powder, liquid, or suppositories.
Types Of Painkillers
- Codeine. Codeine is a painkiller derived from opium. It is injected or ingested. Some medications that can be prescribed to include: codeine, include cough syrups, and Tylenol 3.
- Morphine. Morphine is the painkiller made from opium. It is often injected, ingested or smoked. Some of its brand names include Roxanol and Duramorph.
- Hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is the synthetic opioid often used with acetaminophen or Tylenol, and its brand names are Vicodin, Lortab, and Lorcet.
- Oxycodone. Oxycodone is another synthetic opioid. It is often crushed and snorted by the abuser. Oxycodone is sold under the brand names Oxycontin, Percodan, and Percocet .
- Fentanyl. Fentanyl is the synthetic opioid sold as brands such as Actiq and Duragesic. It is injected, smoked, or snorted.
Other Painkillers
There are many other painkillers on the market that people may abuse. These painkillers may be swallowed, injected, chewed, snorted or taken as suppository.
